Out of all the critical theories I am going to go with the readers response. Some ideas I was thinking about writing on are Sonny's teenage life and childhood life. I would go off the type of environment he lived/lives in and the people around him. How these things affect how he is now, like how he behaves and why he steals etc. Is his life normal? What might be missing in his life? Similarities and differences between me and Sonny on what is important to us. Compare and contrast Sonny's life to my own teenage life and childhood life.
To support all these ideas I wrote down I would take from the book. There are many examples and quotes I could take from The Flowers since its written from Sonny's perspective. My argument would be about focusing on comparing and contrasting my life to Sonny's to answer the question is his life normal? Everything that happens made him become the person he is and I want to prove that living in a different and tough environment can make you into a not so normal teenage boy.
I can also take my ideas from my blogs I have posted. I have wrote about Sonny's and his mothers relationship and compared it to mine and my mothers. I could go off that and state their relationship and how it has changed and affected Sonny. Another blog I wrote is about how he steals money from people. I could use this blog also because it has quotes proving he steals and how he feels about stealing. I also have a blog about the character Pink, that Sonny has an agreement with, and that could also help me since I'm incorporating the people and tenants around him into my paper.

ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea! I see your thesis forming around this statement, "Everything that happens made him become the person he is and I want to prove that living in a different and tough environment can make you into a not so normal teenage boy." I'm very excited to read this paper and see how you construct your argument. The hardest part (I think) of Reader Response is mastering the blend of personal experience with the textual analysis while staying focused on your thesis. Good luck and happy writing! Also, I'd like to see how you connect Sonny's decision at the end of the book to your analysis. Great work on your blog so far Londa!
